I recently spent 2 months in Costa Rica in preperation of a 6 month visit in April 2010.  In addition to looking at real estate in the Grecia - San Ramón - Atenas areas,  I spent time reviewing the current requirements for Residency.  If you are interested in retiring in Costa Rica, I highly recommend multiple visits and doing research to make sure you are ready for such an adventure. 
In addition, improving your Spanish speaking skills will only enhance your experience and allow for more interaction with the local Ticos...
